Fårö and the rauks

Thursday, 24 September, 2020, 7:38 AM

During our swecation to Gotland, we brought a car so that we could take a daytrip to another island just north of Gotland, called Fårö. And to be completely honest, the only reason that we went to Fårö, is for the simple reason that I kept bothering my travel companions to see the rauks.
Have you ever heard of such a thing like a rauk?

You can go by car, bus, taxi, or bike to the ferry station that will get you across from Gotland to Fårö in just a few minutes. And it will cost you nothing at all to go the ferry. From there its a bit of drive, so make sure that you choose the transportation that's best for you in the long run.

We headed to lunch firstly at the beach, then we took a small drive to get to the rauks. It's so worth the trip, I mean common, look at the stone formations that nature made. The waves from the ocean have slowly decomposed some of the more brittle parts of the rock, leaving only the roughest rock, namely, limestone, left. As the water levels dropped (yeeeeears ago), the stoneformations were visible from land.

There are several different beaches with rauks on Fårö, but we choose to visit this one that's called Langhammars nature reserve, one of the most famous rauk beaches on the island.

Yeah yeah of course thease formations arent made by nature...

Okay, after seeing the images and reading this, can you really blame me for wanting this daytrip to the island of Fårö, just north of Gotland in Sweden? I do think that this is a bucketlist worthy trip, it's just something we should be able to say that we have seen.

Days on the beach

Thursday, 10 September, 2020, 6:47 AM

I never knew that I could find so many hidden treasures in my own backyard. Exploring our local surroundings this summer has been so much fun, and our weekend on the island of Nåttarö was one of the best once I have had in a long time.

I mean, magical beaches, sun, and great company - what more can a girl ask for?

From Stockholm in Sweden, it will take you about 45 minutes to get to Nynäshamn by train, and from there you take the ferry over to the island of Nåttarö which will take you yet another 35 minutes and set you back about 20 euro per person for a round-trip. But for us that actually live in Nynäshamn, well, it's just a boat ride, and then you're in paradise. So why don't we go there more often one might ask...

I have probably been on the island as a kid, on a school trip, or maybe go camping with the family, but I have never been there in my adult life. I didn't think there would be beaches like this so close to Stockholm, and sure, after spending some time on Fårö I should have figured there was, but I really didn't. I have never quite had the interest to explore the local surroundings like this, and I have had zero interest in checking out the nearby archipelago and the small islands. Luckily, that makes for some great surprises as I start exploring them now.

Just having the luxury of a beach so close by all the time is amazing, I mean, I know we have some great beaches where I live... just not as beautiful and kind of exotic as this one. Spending a weekend on the island sure felt like a weekend abroad - 35 minutes away from home.

British pub night

Friday, 4 September, 2020, 6:10 AM

Who does not like a good pub crawl? Maybe not a crawl, but I do enjoy walking around from pub to pub and having a cider, a beer, and some good local pub food. So for this week's episode of our series of Food Travel we did just that, we created a British pub night.

One of my all-time favorites when it comes to pub food is Shepards Pie, I think you have all heard of it and maybe even seen it, but have you tried it?

It's really quite easy to make. You just mix minced meat, Worchester sauce, soya, salt and pepper, and an egg together to make your filling. Then do make some mashed potatoes with cream, egg yolk, and some cheese. Add your meat in the bottom of a pan, mashed potatoes on top, some extra cheese. It all goes in the oven to get that good crust. Tada, you have made yourself a Shepard's Pie!

Naturally we had some fried snacks as well, like onion rings, chili cheese, mozzarella sticks, fries, and chicken wings. But to be honest, deep-frying stuff is quite hard, so our fried foods were not really all that photogenic. We'll keep trying to perfect it for later, but for now, you'll just have to live without that image.

And as always we have that little photo bomber, this time it was our youngest cat that's called Fjant, that kindly planted her self in the basket where the beer was supposed to go, on the table. Her name is most correctly translated into Dofus because that's kind of what she is.

From left to right: Bulmers Cider, Youngs Double Chocolate Stout, Innis & Gunn, Brewdog Punk Ipa, St Peters Cream Stout, and Hobgoblin Ruby Beer.

We did a little tasting of some British beers, stouts, ales, and ciders just to give the pub feeling a bump. We rated all six of them with points, six points for our favorite, and one for our least favorite, and then we combined our points for a final score. So all five of us, me, Jacob, Angelica, Lee, and Hanna rated the bottles according to our own tastebuds. So here are our ratings, in the same order as they are lined up in the image above, just to make it a bit easier to follow along.

Bulmers Original Cider
This is a medium-sweet cider, that gives a taste of red apples with a hint of vanilla. I would say that this one is best over ice, but that's my preference.
Points: 22

Youngs Double Chocolate
This is a stout with a clear taste of dark chocolate, coffee, and fudge. It's a bit on the heavy side, so one bottle is more than enough to share as a dessert after dinner.
Points: 25

Innis & Gunn
Bourbon barrel scotch ale, that's what it says on the bottle. It's a strong ale with a golden color that's been aged on oak barrels.
Points: 21

Brewdog Punk Ipa
I have always felt like an IPA tastes kind of like an old grandmother's perfume, so that might be a bit unfair to this particular beer, but we had to have one in the game. It's said to be tasting of caramel and tropical fruit, spiky bitter finish.
Points: 7

St Peters Cream Stout
Dark and strong with a taste of creamy chocolate and bittersweet aftertaste. Like all stouts its quite rich with a clear tone of coffee and vanilla notes.
Points: 21

Hobgoblin
Slightly dry and citrusy, this ruby beer has a hint of toffee and even chocolate. And I would give this one an extra point just for the beautiful color.
Points: 11

And the winner is...
